HOW TO CURL YOUR HAIR WITH A CURLING IRON

Here are Step-by-step instructions for using a curling iron.

You will need:

  • A wig head
  • T-pins
  • A table clamp or tripod
  • Claw style hair clips
  • Hair spray and heat protectant spray
  • A comb or brush

Step 1: Choose Your Curling Iron.

Consider the type of curl you want.

If you want tighter curls look for a barrel size of ¾” or smaller

For a medium curl use a 1”or 1 ¼” barrel

For looser waves use a 1 ½” barrel

A tourmaline or ceramic iron is a good option; it heats up evenly and reduces frizz.

Step 2: Wash Your Wig

Start with clean hair. Use a volumizering products  if your wig is sleeker or products for sleeker hair if your wig has more texture. When the hair is still damp use a heat protectant as well as mousse for volume. Gently comb the hair.

Step 3: Dry the Wig.

It’s best to air dry the wig if you can to avoid more heat on the hair. However, you may blow-dry the hair if needed.  Blow- dry the hair when it’s about halfway dry. The hair should be completely dry before you start using your iron. Comb or brush the hair so it is free of knots.

Step 4: Test the Settings.

Now that the hair is dry you are ready to start using your curling iron. Pin your wig onto a wig head and make sure it is secure. Start with the lowest setting and test to see the type of curl it creates. It’s best to use the iron on the lowest setting possible. Adjust the temperature as necessary.

Step 5: Curl Your Hair

Start by dividing the wig into layers. Start at the bottom, clip the higher layers away.  Divide the hair into 1” sections and curl each section. Keep the iron on the hair and release after a few seconds. If you want a looser wave you can pull the curl straight down for about 10 seconds.

Experiment with curling the hair away from the face, toward the face or mixture of the two.

Step 6: Finish the Look

Once you’ve finished curling the entire wig you can run your fingers through the curls to loosen them or shake the curls out for a more natural look.

Step 7: Set Your Curls

Spray the wig with hairspray to help the curls last.
