6 Tips to Making Your Blowout Last

6 Tips to Making Your Blowout Last

Making your set last is the holy grail of wig wearer. It’s really quite simple, as your wig doesn’t require lots of washing often. If you take care of your wig and store it on a wig head when you aren’t wearing it the set can last a long time. We share some tips the will further help the set maintain itself.

Ask for extra volume

Don’t be scared to ask for additional volume for your set, the wig will settle and you’ll be happy with how long the volume lasts.

Avoid moisture

Humidity and water is the biggest enemy of a set wig. Keep your wig away from shower steam, while opening a hot oven or any other activity that might affect the hair.

Dry shampoo

We speak about dry shampoo a lot in our blogs and we are big fans. Use dry shampoo to absorb extra oils or odors, you should also use it to extend the time until you need a new wash and set

Avoid pony holders

Don’t put your hair up in a ponytail if you want to keep the set lasting. A pony tail holder will flatten your set and will add a crease to the hair

Don’t touch your hair

Keep your hands off! A freshly set wig feels silky and you’ll want to run your fingers through it. Don’t do it. Leave your wig with the style set and don’t mess with it! Touching it too much will make your blow dry fall flat and will add additional oils to the hair.

Sensitive Scalp and Your Wig

Sensitive Scalp and Your Wig

What does one do if they have a sensitive scalp and find they experience discomfort while wearing their wig?

The experience of wearing an uncomfortable wig can be disheartening especially when you’re not sure if there is a solution.  Luckily there are a few solutions to try if you are feeling discomfort.

  1. The cap can be softened through washing.  You can use fabric softener on the cap to soften to cap quickly. Often this is all you’ll need to do to make the wig comfortable.
  2. Try a wig cap under the wig, sometimes it’s the loose hair that causes the discomfort, and containing it will fix the issue.
  3. A lining can be added to your wig. Freeda offers a silk-like lining or velvet lining that offers comfort when you are experiencing sensitivity.
  4.  Try washing your wig with a different shampoo and avoid any hair products you’ve used on your wig. Sometimes it’s the products you are feeling sensitivity to.

There’s always a resolution to get your wig feeling comfortable. Please call our office if you’re feeling any discomfort or have any other issues with your wig. Our staff will help you find a solution that works so you can wear your beautiful Freeda wig comfortably.

There are solutions for sizing concerns.

  2. Freeda has a professional fit specialist on staff. If your wig needs to be taken out or made smaller we can get your wig to a perfect fit.
  3. Adjustable elastic tabs are sewn into every wig, for minor adjustments you simply tighten or loosen the elastics for the correct fit.

Advice for First Time Wig Wearers

Advice for First Time Wig Wearers

It’s hard to know how to know the ins and outs of wig wearing when you first get started. Lots of the knowledge comes from wearing the wig and figuring out the little tips and tricks as you go along.  If you feel like something just isn’t right you might want to see if our tips below help you get your wig looking in tip top shape.

The Fit

Does the wig fit properly from ear to ear?

Your wig might fit properly in the circumference and from forehead to nape, but the temple to temple fit is also important.   The perfect fit is when the temples, ear tabs and nape of the wig all sit in the right spots. Even a ¼ inch off can make a difference. If the wig doesn’t fit the way it should it can slide around, causing the hairline to sit in the wrong place. Make sure the wig fits well and sits in the right spot, if it doesn’t just contact us; it’s an easy fix with big results.

Securing the Wig

Next- if the fit is perfect but you are securing it incorrectly the hairline will be off. To get the wig in the right spot just grab the two ear tabs and make sure they are even before you secure the wig on your head.

Tying the Hair Underneath

When you wear the wig, the way you tie the hair underneath will make a lot of difference on how natural the wig looks. A ponytail or bun in the wrong place adds a bump to the shape of the wig. Depending on how much hair you have you’ll need to experiment on what works best. Some like to make a low braid or pony and use a flat clip to secure the hair around the side of the head. Some make a flat bun at the nape of the neck. Some like to have an opening at the nape of the neck and pull the hair through the bottom of the wig.

Is a Topper a Good Choice For Me?

Is a Topper a Good Choice For Me?

For those experiencing thinning but not ready for a full wig can find themselves in this uncomfortable middle ground. You might not be ready for a wig, but at the same time you miss the fullness you once had. You are tired of the constant struggle and time consuming efforts to hide the thinning and wish there was a solution for you. Depending on the level and pattern of thinning a topper could be a good option for you.
Freeda’s goal is to help all feel beautiful and proud of their hair; while many companies don’t offer toppers, we are proud to offer custom-made toppers for many happy clients. We will share all information about toppers to help you decide what the best option would be for you.

What is a Topper?

A topper provides coverage on the crown area allowing one to mix their own hair with the topper. This will give you beautiful volume once again and take away the endless, time consuming efforts to make you feel beautiful and comfortable.

What is the Process of Ordering a Topper?

Our professionals will find a wig that matches your hair color, length and texture. Our fit specialist will measure your head and create a custom topper from an existing wig. This process can be done in a short amount of time.

We then cut the topper and blend it with your existing hair style. We will teach you how to secure the topper, blend the hair, and care for it.

What is the Expected Time Frame?

Your topper can be completed in under a week! Keep in mind that the customizations could take more time, but majority of our toppers are ready for wear in a short amount of time, allowing you to enjoy your new hair immediately.

Will People Know I’m Wearing a Topper?

They will not! Your topper will look like your hair on its best hair day! Freeda uses only virgin European hair allowing you to highlight it, and style it exactly the way you’ve been accustomed to.  People will comment on how good your hair looks and ask what your secret is.

Wig Hacks

Do it yourself roots!

You’ve been wearing your wig and you love it. You hear about rooting your wig or adding roots and are interested in trying it.

What are roots?

Roots are darker color added to the hair by the crown to mimic the look of what your hair looks like about two weeks after you’ve had it colored. It especially looks natural on a wig where the hair won’t grow. It’s another way that no one will guess that you’re wearing a wig.

Roots can be just a quarter inch long or they can be as long as a few inches. Adding dye to your wig is permanent. Maybe it’s not a look you want to wear daily or maybe you’re concerned that you might not like it and don’t want to commit to something so final.

Would you believe we have a hack for this one?

This trick will cost just a few dollars, and it’s something you can do it yourself. If you don’t like it and it’s not your style, just wash it right out.

Have you heard of a touch up stick? A touch up stick is crayon-like, created to color on your hair if you need to cover grays but don’t have time to get to a salon. All you need to do is simply buy a touch up stick that is darker than your wig. Color the roots of your wig for instant wig change that you can do on your own.

What do you think about simple trick? If you try it let us know what you think. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks as we share our favorite wig hacks with you.

Appealing a Denied Insurance Claim

Appealing a Denied Insurance Claim

It can be pretty aggravating when you submit a claim for reimbursement for your medically necessary wig just to find they’ve denied your claim.

Their decision may not be final and you have a right to appeal. These are the steps you should take if you find yourself in that situation. Medically necessary wigs should be reimbursed!

The Steps:

  • Educate yourself with your insurances coverage policy. Read the contract and be familiar with it.
  • Understand the wording that might make your wig qualify or not qualify. A claim for a wig likely won’t qualify, a cranial prosthesis likely will. Perhaps there is other terminology (some use the term prosthesis device or other wording) that you should or shouldn’t use. Read the contract carefully and thoroughly.
  • Send your original claim to the Medical Review Board and ask that they review the decision.
  • Educate yourself on the medical codes and diagnosis codes; ask your doctors for help with this to ensure the correct codes were used.  Be certain that your doctor included very specific details of the medical condition that has caused your hair loss.
  • Find out the name of the head of the Claim’s Department, send your appeal directly to them and request a response.
  • Include a personal note on why the cranial prosthesis is necessary. Include before and after photos to show the wig is not for cosmetic purposes. Talk about how the hair loss has affected you, whether it is social, financial, or emotional reasons.
  • Keep copies of all documents, receipts, and such. Keep a record of any calls you’ve made, who you spoke to and the basics of the conversation.

If the appeal is denied your other option would be to look into financial assistance. There are organizations that help the uninsured, underinsured and those with financial difficulty. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation the American Cancer Society or your county’s Department of Social Services may offer financial assistance.

Last, your medically necessary wig will qualify as a tax deduction. Contact us at Freeda Wigs to obtain any necessary documents or assistance you might need. We have been helping women feel beautiful for over 50 years and make it our mission to do what we can so that everyone, no matter their circumstances, should feel beautiful in their Freeda wig.

How to File an Insurance Claim for Your Freeda Wig

How to File an Insurance Claim for Your Freeda Wig

We’ve discussed how it may be likely that your insurance might pay for or contribute towards the price of your medically necessary wig.  Women and men who qualify for a wig, due to cancer or alopecia, often are surprised at the amount their insurance will cover.

In this blog we discuss how an insurance company may deny a claim for a wig reimbursement but the very same claim submitted for a cranial prosthesis is accepted, as is it considered medically essential.  We urge everyone to submit a claim to their insurance, even if you think it won’t be accepted, as the pressure on the insurance companies can perhaps help those in the future who need medical wigs.

Here’s a check list of the steps you should do when submitting receipts for insurance.

  • Get the prescription from your doctor for a cranial prosthesis along with a diagnosis code.
  • Use the procedure coding (usually A9282, S8095 or 99199)
  • Add the providers NPI number to the claim. The NPI number will be a 10 digit number that identifies your health care provider
  • Submit your receipt for your cranial prosthesis from the establishment where you purchased your wig. It is a special receipt that won’t include the word wig and will have our tax ID number on it
  • Have your doctor sign the insurance claim

If you’ve purchased your wig through Freeda we can coach you through this process. We will provide you with the documents you need. If you’ve just read this and decided now to submit an insurance claim we can email you all necessary documents.

Call us or email us for any assistance you might need to for your insurance.  At Freeda’s we know how important it is for people going through hair loss to look and feel beautiful. We are dedicated to do what we can do help individuals get the beautiful wig they deserve.
